How to Change the Oil in Your Car
What You'll Need:
- Engine oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)
- Oil filter
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench or socket to fit the oil drain plug
- Wrench or socket to fit the oil filter
- Gloves
- Rags
Instructions:
- Park your car on a level surface. Turn off the engine and let it cool down for a few minutes.
- Open the hood. Locate the oil filler cap and remove it.
- Place the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug. The oil drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the oil pan, which is the large metal pan under the engine.
- Use the wrench or socket to loosen the oil drain plug. Be careful, the oil may be hot.
- Allow the oil to drain into the pan. This may take a few minutes.
- Once the oil has drained, replace the oil drain plug and tighten it with the wrench or socket.
- Remove the old oil filter. Use the wrench or socket to loosen the filter and then unscrew it by hand. Be careful, the filter may be full of hot oil.
- Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket on the new oil filter. This will help to create a seal and prevent leaks.
- Screw on the new oil filter by hand. Do not overtighten it.
- Remove the funnel from the oil filler neck.
- Pour new oil into the engine. Be careful not to overfill it.
- Replace the oil filler cap.
- Close the hood.
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for leaks.
- Turn off the engine and check the oil level. Add more oil if necessary.
Additional tips on changing your own oil:
- Change your oil every 4800 to 6500 km, or more often if you drive in dusty or sandy conditions.
- Use the correct type of oil for your car. Check your owner's manual for the recommended type.
- Do not overfill the engine with oil. This can cause damage to the engine.
- Dispose of the old oil and filter properly. You can take them to a local auto parts store or recycling centre.
