Company background

The founder and owner of Nortons, Patrick Kühn, was once employed as a foreman in a panel beating shop. To earn an extra penny, he started panel beating for private clients in the evenings and over weekends in his backyard in Bonteheuwel.

Patrick resigned from his day job in 1980 and put all his energy into his own panel beating business. Now one of the biggest panel beating companies in the Western Cape, Nortons Auto Services began as a modest enterprise fuelled by one man’s dream.

In 1980, when black entrepreneurs were unable to get bank loans, Patrick bought a wrecked car, fixed it and sold it for a profit. He used this money to rent a business premises and registered his business in the same year to secure more work from insurance companies.

Sticking to strict business principles, Nortons Auto Services started small and grew slowly but surely, while maintaining a reputation of quality service – which Patrick considers the best marketing tool.

In addition to using only recognised dealers’ parts, and working with reputable dealers and insurance companies, Patrick registered his business with the CRA(Collision Repairers Association) . Nortons is also part of the STi group, which strives for quality and integrity, and the service quality system KA-Smart.

While Patrick is now the owner of one of the country’s most successful panel beating businesses, he hasn’t forgotten their humble beginnings. Therefore, Nortons is also involved in a CSI (corporate social investment) initiative which uplifts disadvantaged individuals – especially those who did not have the opportunity to complete their schooling – by training them in the art of automotive body repairs.

Whether it comes to caring or repairing – Nortons strives for quality and integrity.
